The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) is the most widely used measure of workplace burnout, based on the model of Maslach and Jackson (1981). It assesses three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization (cynicism), and reduced personal accomplishment. Our version asks about your experience at work. Source: Maslach & Jackson, 1981 (PubMed).

How to use it: Answer about your current job as honestly as you can. There are no right or wrong answers.

Reading your score: Higher scores on exhaustion and cynicism, and lower scores on accomplishment, point toward more burnout. The bands are general guides.

Limitations: This is a self-report screening tool, not a diagnosis. Burnout overlaps with stress and depression, and only a professional can tell them apart.

When to seek help: If burnout feels high or is harming your health or work, consider talking with a professional or your employee assistance program. If you ever feel you might harm yourself, contact 988 (US) right away.
